Position Summary

Primary Duties

Working under supervision of a physician laboratory director or higher level Clinical Laboratory Scientist, (CLS) the Clinical Laboratory Scientist I, as a licensed professional, is responsible for the performance of a wide variety of moderate to highly complex clinical laboratory tests and examinations. Clinical Laboratory Scientists primarily provide medical staff with essential data and information for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illness, diseases, and other conditions found within the university setting. Assignments typically include some or all of the following, diagnostic tests ordered by physician or other licensed practitioner, such as routine urinalysis, pregnancy tests, blood tests, and antibiotic sensitivity tests. The Clinical Lab Scientist collects specimens, prepares solutions and reagents, examines and interprets outcomes, and maintain a safe laboratory environment in accordance with established standards, protocols, and applicable federal and state regulations, such as the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA). Additional responsibilities include calibration and maintenance of equipment, as well as operational support and laboratory quality assurance.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:
Incumbent must possess:

  • Thorough Knowledge of:
    • The theories, principles and practices of clinical laboratory science including the use and care of all applicable laboratory equipment.
  • Working knowledge of:
    • Chemical and bio-hazard substances.
    • Various laboratory disciplines, tests and procedures including chemical, physical, microscopic, microbiological, bacteriological, serological, hematological, immunological, and other related disciplines and laboratory tests.
    • The preparation of specimens and proper storage of specimens.
    • Automated information systems, computers and technology used in clinical laboratory settings.
    • Computer and technology systems common to health care.
  • General knowledge of:
    • State and federal regulations pertaining to the operation of a clinical laboratory.
    • Clinical laboratory quality control and assurance procedures, protocols and standards.
  • Basic knowledge of:
    • Mycology, virology, and genetics.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Demonstrated skill in:
    • The performance of a variety of laboratory analyses and evaluate information against measurable criteria.
    • In specimen preparation and storage, working with bacteriological cultures and media types and “troubleshooting” instrumentation when needed.

REQUIRED ABILITIES:
Must be able to:

  • Identify incongruities in test procedures and inconsistencies in reports of test results for a patient.
  • Notice pertinent details of specimens under microscopic study.
  • Perform applicable mathematical calculations rapidly and accurately.
  • Troubleshoot minor instrumentation problems.
  • Operate standard office equipment and computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Stay current on developments in the field of clinical laboratory science.
  • Adjust to change such as work environment and technology.
  • Perform assigned duties.
Required Education and/or Experience

Incumbents must possess the requisite education for licensing, which is a Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science or equivalent from an accredited institution or equivalent post-secondary education, training and experience as defined by the California Division of Laboratory Science.
OR
Combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.
AND
LICENSING/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Possess and maintain a valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license.

Recruitment Preferences

Preference may be given to applicants with the following as they may be considered specialized skills:

  • Two years, full-time work experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist or similar position, demonstrating professional and technical competencies to independently perform the above described duties.
  • Fluent written and verbal multi-lingual/bilingual skills.
  • Experience working in an academic environment.
Special Requirements
  • The person holding this position is considered a “mandated reporter” under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
  • The duties of this position will include participation in a decision that may have a material/financial benefit to the incumbent. Therefore, this is a “designated position” under the California State University’s Conflict of Interest Code and the incumbent will be required to file a Form 700: Statement of Economic Interest and is subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.
  • A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU.   • The selected candidate must pass a post-offer pre-employment physical examination and vision tests including distance vision, color blindness, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Incumbent/applicant will need to be able to perform the essential job functions (duties) of this position with or without reasonable accommodation. This is a typical walk-in clinic environment, requiring the use of standard office and laboratory equipment. Personal protective clothing required while working such as laboratory coats, closed-toe shoes, safety glasses, latex gloves. Employee will be required to frequently sit, move, or stand at a counter as well as moving in small spaces within the lab. Also includes the need to sit or work at a microscope and computer terminal for long periods of time. There is exposure to a heat source used when sterilizing while plating cultures. There is also noise exposure from centrifuge and other equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed in a busy diverse health care environment. Will work with bio-hazardous materials and chemicals after appropriate training. Moderate noise levels exist at various times in the laboratory. Tools used in the clinical laboratory setting including pipettes syringes, tubes, laboratory glassware as well as cell counters, centrifuges, heat blocks and incubators, Genprobe system, spectophotometers, vortexers and rotators, etc.

Eligibility for standard CSU benefits is based on an appointment of half-time or more for a period exceeding six months. Employees appointed less than half-time or less than six months are not eligible for standard CSU benefits but do receive prorated sick leave and vacation.

Eligibility for Affordable Care Act (ACA) benefits is based on an appointment of at least three-quarter time, hired to work a minimum of 130 hours per month over the course of the appointment or works an average of 130 hours or more per month during the measurement period. The ACA guidelines provide for health coverage or FlexCash only. ACA does not provide dental or vision plan coverage.
