The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is searching for a probationary assistant or associate level professor in Mathematics Education to start August, 2018. California State University, Chico is seeking faculty who are competent in their field, collaborative with colleagues and staff, and committed to student success. Position is contingent on funding.

Minimum Education and Experience

The minimum education requirement for appointment to this position is a Doctorate in Mathematics Education, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field. Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate may be considered; however, all requirements for conferral of the doctorate must be complete prior to the beginning of the academic year August, 2018. Ability or potential for excellence in university teaching and capacity or potential for excellence in research, writing, pursuing external funding, or other scholarly activities. The successful candidate should also demonstrate a commitment to and/or experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Additional Requirements and Responsibilities for this position

This tenure-track position carries responsibilities in the areas of teaching mathematics education and mathematics courses to undergraduates, including elementary and secondary pre-service teachers, scholarship (publications, grant, or other scholarly activity in mathematics education), and service. Responsibilities do not include supervision of student teachers. Teaching assignments are based upon qualifications of the individual and the needs of the department.

CSU, Chico offers a number of benefits to its employees (e.g., sick leave, vacation, health insurance). Eligibility for standard CSU benefits is based on an appointment of half-time or more for a period exceeding six months. Employees appointed less than half-time or less than six months are not eligible for standard CSU benefits but do receive prorated sick leave and vacation.

Eligibility for Affordable Care Act (ACA) benefits is based on an appointment of at least three-quarter time, hired to work a minimum of 130 hours per month over the course of the appointment or works an average of 130 hours or more per month during the measurement period. The ACA guidelines provide for health coverage or FlexCash only. ACA does not provide dental or vision plan coverage.

About the University, Hiring Department and Community

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics consists of 18 full time faculty, roughly 17 full time equivalent lecturers, and 200 increasingly diverse math majors, nearly half of which are in the mathematics education option. We place a high priority on quality teaching but also require and value research and service. Our vibrant mathematics education group is looking to build upon four recent successful searches. We are active in seeking external funding for professional development projects for K-12 teachers, collegiate curricular development, and other scholarly work. We teach and continue to develop mathematics courses and programs designed to foster prospective elementary and secondary mathematics teachers. In addition, we are restarting our summer/online hybrid Master’s program geared towards in-service teachers.
