Position Summary

Primary Duties

Under the general supervision of the Nursing Supervisor incumbent performs general and specialized nursing functions and some administrative functions by following established protocols and approved standardized procedures. Incumbent will be involved in the direct and indirect care of patients, and services that ensure the safety, comfort, disease prevention and restorative measures for students. The Registered Nurse III incumbents are responsible for the development and implementation of nursing standards, policies, and procedures for the assigned specialty nursing services area such as, primary care or triage, however incumbents will be responsible to cover all areas in the absence of the primary lead for an area. Duties include planning, organizing, directing and overseeing the services and work of others.

Student Health Services (SHS) is an outpatient acute care clinic, staffed by physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and physician assistants who provide medical care to students enrolled in the University in accordance with policies set by the Board of Trustees of California State University. An in-house licensed pharmacy, federally certified laboratory, and x-ray department complement the services available.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Possession of broader and specialized nursing knowledge that supports the performance of specialized duties in such areas as, but not limited to, triage and assessment, patient counseling, and lead work direction.
  • Comprehensive understanding of nursing programs and specialties.

Thorough knowledge of:

  • Professional nursing principles, methods and procedures.
  • Anatomy and physiology applicable to assigned duties.
  • Medical supplies and equipment used in nursing practice.
  • The uses and effects of medications and narcotics.
  • EMR charting.
  • Oxygen administration, nebulizer, splinting and EKG.

Working knowledge of:

  • Applicable state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to registered nursing and the scope of practice limitations of clinic support staff.

  • Effective supervisory methods and techniques.

General knowledge of:

  • Standard office machines and software packages.

  • Computer skills to work with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet, on-line calendaring, e-mail and electronic medical records.

  • Read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.
  • Work and communicate effectively with a diverse population of faculty and staff.
  • Adjust to change (i.e. work environment, technology, etc.).
  • Perform assigned duties.
Required Education and/or Experience

Completion of a professional nursing program in an approved school of nursing or by additional preparation as approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
AND
Three years of progressively responsible professional nursing experience which has provided evidence of the ability to perform the nursing duties described above and has included administrative and lead responsibilities; or equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.
AND
License and Certifications:

  • Possess a valid license as a Registered Nurse in the State of California.
  • Possess a valid Basic Life Support/Automated External Defibrillator Certificate (CPR/AED).

Recruitment Preferences

Preference may be given to applicants with the following as they may be considered specialized skills:

  • Previous experience in urgent care/emergency room
  • Proficient with IV therapy.
  • Full-time equivalent of at least three (3) years of experience as an acute care nurse (either hospital-based or outpatient setting) in which supervisory abilities have been demonstrated.
  • Experience with applicable health center automated systems to perform duties and maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Recent and significant experience with acute and critical care of assault victims.
  • Recent experience with acute and critical care of substance abuse patients.
  • Experience evaluating, developing, and implementing nursing program(s).
  • Fluent written and verbal multi-lingual/bilingual skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze emergency situations and take prompt action.
Special Requirements

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Incumbent/applicant will need to be able to perform the essential job functions (duties) of this position with or without reasonable accommodation. This position is required to stand or walk for approximately six hours per shift. Keyboarding and mousing is required to operate computers. Light lifting is required to transport and/or use medical records, instruments, and supplies. May be required to reposition patients and/or push or pull wheelchairs. Must be able to travel across campus to other offices and buildings for meetings and events.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Position involves constant interaction with students, staff and occasionally with faculty to perform student health care and advising. Work is performed in the Student Health Center (typical outpatient facility) which is indoors, well-lighted, well-ventilated, heated, and air-conditioned. The duties of this position involve direct, personal contact with patients. There may be exposure to infection, communicable diseases and contaminated material. Infectious material hazards involve regular exposure to disease-bearing specimens, body fluids, wastes and blood-borne pathogens. May require occasional additional work hours, including attendance at weekend recruitment and advising events. It should be noted that service dogs may be present. May be called back for disaster response or emergencies.

Eligibility for standard CSU benefits is based on an appointment of half-time or more for a period exceeding six months. Employees appointed less than half-time or less than six months are not eligible for standard CSU benefits but do receive prorated sick leave and vacation.

Eligibility for Affordable Care Act (ACA) benefits is based on an appointment of at least three-quarter time, hired to work a minimum of 130 hours per month over the course of the appointment or works an average of 130 hours or more per month during the measurement period.
