The Civil Engineering Department is searching for one tenure track Assistant Professor hire in EITHER Structural Engineering, OR Geotechnical/Pavement Engineering to start August 15, 2018. California State University, Chico is seeking faculty who are competent in their field, collaborative with colleagues and staff, and committed to student success. Position is contingent on funding.

Minimum Education and Experience

STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING
The minimum education requirement for appointment to this position is an earned doctorate in civil engineering (or a related field). Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate may be considered; however, all requirements for conferral of the doctorate must be complete prior to the beginning of the academic year by August 2018 for an August 2018 starting date. Specific expertise is required in the field of structural engineering.
Expertise/interest and ability to teach a variety of courses in the department is also required.

GEOTECHNICAL/PAVEMENT ENGINEERING
The minimum education requirement for appointment to this position is an earned doctorate in civil engineering (or a related field). Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate may be considered; however, all requirements for conferral of the doctorate must be complete prior to the beginning of the academic year by August 2018 for an August 2018 starting date. Specific expertise is required in the field of geotechnical/pavement engineering. Expertise/interest and ability to teach a variety of courses in the department is also required.

Additional Requirements and Responsibilities for this position

This tenure-track position carries responsibilities in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and service. Responsibilities include instruction in a variety of civil engineering courses, achievement in funded research or other funded professional activity, academic and extra-curricular advising of undergraduate students, and service to the university and community. Excellence in teaching, participation in funded research or other professional activity, and service to the university/community are all requirements for tenure. Teaching assignments are based upon qualifications of the individual and the needs of the department.

Recruitment Preferences

The following are preferred qualifications: Candidates have ability and interest in pursuing externally funded research and/or professional activity (demonstrated through previous accomplishments and/or publications). Candidates have demonstrated their ability as an effective teacher. Candidates have a bachelor of science in civil engineering from an ABET-accredited program, professional registration in Civil Engineering (any state) or the ability to obtain professional registration within a few years.

Benefits

CSU, Chico offers a number of benefits to its employees (e.g., sick leave, vacation, health insurance). Eligibility for standard CSU benefits is based on an appointment of half-time or more for a period exceeding six months. Employees appointed less than half-time or less than six months are not eligible for standard CSU benefits but do receive prorated sick leave and vacation.

Eligibility for Affordable Care Act (ACA) benefits is based on an appointment of at least three-quarter time, hired to work a minimum of 130 hours per month over the course of the appointment or works an average of 130 hours or more per month during the measurement period. The ACA guidelines provide for health coverage or FlexCash only. ACA does not provide dental or vision plan coverage.

The Department of Civil Engineering is housed in the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Construction Management. The baccalaureate program in Civil Engineering was established in 1957, is ABET-accredited, currently serves approximately 350 majors, and provides high-quality graduates to leading civil engineering firms, public agencies, and graduate schools. The Civil Engineering Department has strengths in earthquake engineering and opportunities for collaborative research in structural engineering.

The California Pavement Preservation Center is housed in the Department of Civil Engineering and provides opportunities for collaborative research in a variety of areas related to pavement.

Department faculty are actively engaged in both teaching and funded academic research in all disciplines of Civil Engineering.
