Position Summary

Primary Duties

Reporting to the Vice President of University Advancement (VPUA), the Associate Vice President (AVP) for Advancement and Director of Capital Campaign, the incumbent is responsible for leadership of the Development team, the Advancement Services team and for developing and implementing strategies for managing the Capital Campaign. The successful candidate must be a proven and effective fund-raiser, planner, leader, manager, and team builder who will be responsible for leading a team of professionals committed to increasing broad-based support and improving philanthropic giving to California State University, Chico.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

KNOWLEDGE:
Thorough knowledge of:

  • The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) standards and their application to fundraising and campaigns.
  • Effective supervisory practices and techniques, employee-employer relationships, and the management of staff.
  • Strategic planning and goal setting, and project management necessary to monitor progress and timelines.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the principles and practices of University Advancement programs especially comprehensive campaigns and capital campaigns.
  • Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of gift management and stewardship.
  • Thorough knowledge of and experience with management principles, practices and techniques.
  • Working knowledge of budget preparations, planning and resource management.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of information systems and databases that support institutional advancement.

Basic knowledge of:

  • Academic governance and its relationship to an effective fundraising program in higher education.
  • Key issues facing public higher education.
  • Proficiency with computer programs (MS Office products, Outlook, Word and spreadsheet programs, especially Excel)

SKILLS:

  • Strong interpersonal skills to develop an in-depth understanding of and relationship with current and ever evolving community and campus.
  • Must have high degree of personal motivation, skills with independent judgment and persuasiveness.
  • Strong financial analysis and budgeting skills.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills, including analytical skills and the ability to determine relevant information, and to form compelling cases for support.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Strong attention to detail; analytical acumen necessary to read and interpret financial reports and fundraising data.

ABILITIES:
Incumbent must have the ability to:

  • Manage resources with prudence and efficiency.
  • Manage and motivate staff and volunteers and to work closely with faculty and senior-level administrators.
  • Developing and executing a comprehensive fundraising campaign.
  • Learn, interpret and carry out responsibilities in accordance with University policies, procedures, agreements, regulations, campus financial and acquisition systems, and internal control principles, systems and applicable laws.
  • Problem-solve effectively to address concerns and interests of campus constituents, donors vendors and others as needed.
  • Understand problems from a broader perspective, with strategic thinking, and anticipate the impact of problems and solutions on other areas.
  • Respond quickly to changing business needs and priorities.
  • Prepare and present oral and written reports / data which are clear, concise, and comprehensive.
  • Balance strategic thinking with tactical implementation.
  • Build consensus and deliver results.
  • Be available to work out-of-town, evenings and weekends.
  • Work with mathematical concepts.
  • Prioritize and organize resources.
  • Read and write English at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.

Required Education and/or Experience

EDUCATION

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution;
    AND

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 10 years of direct fundraising experience with track record of soliciting and closing 6 and 7 figure gifts.
  • Experience analyzing data and developing systems to improve operating efficiency and productivity.
  • Significant experience planning and executing all aspects of a capital or comprehensive campaign including public phase launch and closing events with significant managerial and leadership roles.
  • Proven leadership, management and administrative experience, with progressively responsible accountability in higher education fundraising management. Experience will include managing a full range of development support functions including donor relations, gift administration, research, records management and reporting.
  • A strong track record of working effectively with volunteers, faculty and administrators, engaging them in the life of the institution and assisting them in improving their effectiveness in all aspects of fundraising.

  • Proven track record securing seven and eight figure gifts.
  • Experience managing successful campaigns in the private or public sector.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage boards.
  • Experience managing development research and data processes and teams.
Special Requirements
  • The person holding this position is considered a “Limited Mandated Reporter” under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 (revised July 21, 2017) as a condition of employment.
  • This position is a Higher Education Employer-Employee Relations Act (HEERA) designated managerial position and comes under the Management Personnel Plan (MPP) of the California State University. Individuals appointed to management positions serve at the pleasure of the President or designee. They are excluded from the collective bargaining process, are not subject to probationary service, and do not receive tenure or permanent status. This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
  • The duties of this position will include participation in a decision that may have a material/financial benefit to the incumbent. Therefore, this is a “designated position” under the California State University’s Conflict of Interest Code and the incumbent will be required to file a Form 700: Statement of Economic Interest and is subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.
  • Throughout employment in this position incumbent must maintain a valid California Driver’s License as well as continued completion and compliance of the CSU Defensive Driver’s Training course.
  • A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position. This is considered a sensitive position. Current CSU, Chico employees are subject to a background check (including a criminal record check) if voluntarily moving into a sensitive position, regardless of any background checks previously conducted. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Incumbent will need to be able to perform the essential job functions (duties) of this position with or without reasonable accommodation. This position alternates between remaining in a stationary position operating a personal computer for long periods of time and frequently moving about inside the office. Must be able to travel across campus to other offices and buildings for meetings and events.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This position involves frequent to constant interaction with students, parents, guests, faculty and staff. The office is a typical office environment with standard office equipment. At times, is a fast-paced environment requiring a flexible schedule. Early morning, evening or weekend hours may be required, as needed to travel and complete work, projects or reports. May occasionally work outside and locations may include even and uneven walking surfaces, exposure to weather changes such as temperatures, humidity, or precipitation. This position also requires travel.

Benefit Information

CSU, Chico offers a number of benefits to its employees (e.g., sick leave, vacation, health insurance). Eligibility for standard CSU benefits is based on an appointment of half-time or more for a period exceeding six months. Employees appointed less than half-time or less than six months are not eligible for standard CSU benefits but do receive prorated sick leave and vacation.

Eligibility for Affordable Care Act (ACA) benefits is based on an appointment of at least three-quarter time, hired to work a minimum of 130 hours per month over the course of the appointment or works an average of 130 hours or more per month during the measurement period. The ACA guidelines provide for health coverage or FlexCash only. ACA does not provide dental or vision plan coverage.
