Position Summary

Primary Duties

Position available for one year from date of hire with the possibility of renewal.

Under the direction of an experienced Accountant, the Accountant I will be given work assignments in the Financial Accounting and Reporting area that are designed to expand practical experience and develop professional judgment in the application of accounting principles. Financial Accounting and Reporting provides a complete package of University-related financial services. Incumbent will apply knowledge of theories, principles, and practices of the accounting profession; classifying, examining, and analyzing financial transactions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Incumbent must possess:

  • General knowledge of:
    • Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
    • Office methods and procedures, such as creating and maintaining computerized databases and spreadsheets.
    • Statistical and arithmetic presentation of data.
  • Advanced proficiency with:
    • Microsoft Excel, Word and Powerpoint; web browsers; data query tools and/or other types of financial data management systems.
    • General ledger of multi-module integrated accounting systems.
    • Fluent in the use of standard office equipment (computers, copiers, phones).
  • Working knowledge of basic financial statements.

Incumbent must possess:

  • Excellent written and verbal skills and the demonstrated competence to effectively present information in either format.
  • Excellent organizational skills to handle heavy workload and multiple projects with frequent interruptions and schedule changes.
  • Demonstrated skill providing analytical, evaluative, innovative, and advisory accounting information.

Incumbent must have the ability to:

  • Interpret and follow instructions and policy guidelines – such as apply laws, rules, and procedures related to governmental accounting.
  • Analyze financial and statistical data and draw conclusions.
  • Utilize problem solving techniques.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Communicate effectively with others inside and outside the unit, including conveying technical information to non- Accountants.
  • Compute and post figures rapidly and accurately amidst frequent interruptions.
  • Adjust to change (i.e., work environment, technology).
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, faculty, and others.
  • Perform duties as assigned.
Required Education and/or Experience

Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree with a major in accounting, business administration, finance or a closely related field.
A combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Recruitment Preferences

Preference may be given to applicants with the following as they may be considered specialized skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
  • CPA/CPA Candidate, specific experience in general and subsidiary ledgers.
  • Demonstrated experience in accounting related to GAAP financial statement audits and audit workpaper preparation.
  • Experience with preparing or auditing fund accounting journal entries.
  • Experience preparing and posting journal entries in the general ledger of a multi-module accounting system.
  • Advanced use and experience with MS Excel creating complex spreadsheets for large data sets.
  • Experience with the creation of data queries and analysis.

Incumbent/applicant will need to be able to perform the essential job functions (duties) of this position with or without reasonable accommodation. This position alternates between remaining in a stationary position operating a personal computer for long periods of time and frequently moving about inside the office. Must be able to travel across campus to other offices and buildings for meetings and events.

Work is performed in a typical office environment operating standard office equipment.

Benefit Information

CSU, Chico offers a number of benefits to its employees (e.g., sick leave, vacation, health insurance). Eligibility for standard CSU benefits is based on an appointment of half-time or more for a period exceeding six months. Employees appointed less than half-time or less than six months are not eligible for standard CSU benefits but do receive prorated sick leave and vacation.

Eligibility for Affordable Care Act (ACA) benefits is based on an appointment of at least three-quarter time, hired to work a minimum of 130 hours per month over the course of the appointment or works an average of 130 hours or more per month during the measurement period. The ACA guidelines provide for health coverage or FlexCash only. ACA does not provide dental or vision plan coverage.
