The Department of English is searching for a tenure track assistant professor in American Multicultural Literature to start in August 2018. The successful candidate will have a record of teaching and scholarship (either demonstrated or with the potential of success) working in a variety of areas and approaches to comparative or interdisciplinary areas of U.S. American literatures. Applicants studying any aspect of American Multicultural Literature are encouraged to apply; however, those working in intersectional and cross-cultural approaches to other ethnic and global literatures are especially welcomed. An interest in the indigenous populations of Northern California and other local populations is a plus. We are especially interested in candidates committed to supporting the success of first-year, first-generation, and underrepresented students. California State University, Chico is seeking faculty who are competent in their field, collaborative with colleagues and staff, and committed to student success.

Minimum Education and Experience

The minimum education requirement for appointment to this position is a Ph.D. in English or related field at the time of appointment. Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate may be considered; however, all requirements for conferral of the doctorate must be complete prior to the beginning of the academic year, August 2018.

Additional Requirements and Responsibilities for this position

The teaching load is three courses per semester for the first two years; subsequently four courses each semester. Teaching responsibilities will include general education courses in American multicultural and/or world literature, undergraduate surveys, and undergraduate- and graduate-level seminars in American literature as well as within the candidate’s disciplinary expertise.

Recruitment Preferences

Eligible candidates could have interests in any area or combination of American Multicultural Literature. The department is open to research and teaching interests including, but not limited to: African American literature, Asian American literature, Native American/American Indian/Indigenous literature, Chicanx/Latinx literature, cultural studies, post-colonial studies, social justice studies, women/gender studies, sexuality studies, working class studies, film studies/theory, migration studies, etc. Our new colleague should have a demonstrated commitment to diversity and social justice as evidenced in their record of teaching, scholarship, and/or service.

Eligibility for standard CSU benefits is based on an appointment of half-time or more for a period exceeding six months. Employees appointed less than half-time or less than six months are not eligible for standard CSU benefits but do receive prorated sick leave and vacation.

Eligibility for Affordable Care Act (ACA) benefits is based on an appointment of at least three-quarter time, hired to work a minimum of 130 hours per month over the course of the appointment or works an average of 130 hours or more per month during the measurement period. The ACA guidelines provide for health coverage or FlexCash only. ACA does not provide dental or vision plan coverage.

About the University, Hiring Department and Community

The English Department is a diverse department with faculty working in five sub-disciplines (Literature, Creative Writing, Composition/Rhetoric, English Education, and Linguistics). Department faculty have a wide range of teaching and research interests, including cross-disciplinary work. Our students come from a variety of traditional and non-traditional academic backgrounds, and we offer the basic linguistics courses required for all future teachers in California. The Department offers three majors (Literature, English Studies, and English Education), minors in English, Creative Writing, and Linguistics, a certificate in TESOL, and a strong M.A. in English, with advising patterns in Literature, Language and Literacy, and Creative Writing. It offers nearly 300 class sections and 10 graduate seminars a year. The department is home to an active National Writing Project site, the ESL Resource Center, the Watershed Review, and participates actively in General Education, Humanities, Honors, and Liberal Studies programs, as well as the Educational Opportunity Program and the Student Learning Center.
