Anticipated Hiring Range: $100,000 - $135,000 Annually 

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Work Location Type: Remote Work Eligible* 

*Although this position will primarily work in a remote capacity, there will be a requirement to report to campus for monthly department meetings, quarterly division meetings, and occasionally to meet campus work needs.  Wherever possible, 1-2 days of prior notice will be provided for on-campus requirements.

 

THE DEPARTMENT

The Cloud and Support Services department provides central technology support for the design, development, security and maintenance of campus-wide computing infrastructure, including: email, web services, intranet services, directory services, account management for technology access, as well as various server operating system environments and databases, including UNIX, Linux and Windows for the support of campus applications such as PeopleSoft, Canvas, Office 365, AWS, Oracle, and network management.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Operating Systems and Application Support:

Ensure operating system software is properly installed, tested, and tuned to maximize operating efficiency. Examples of typical work activities include:

  • Develop and implement plans for fully Integrated systems, including operating systems, network systems, database systems, and applications in VMware and AWS
  • Develop plans, schedules, documentation, and requirements for the installation and maintenance of new and/or revised software.
  • Install, configure, and tune operating systems software for optimal performance.
  • Provide escalated technical support to Cal Poly Pomona and IT division staff, as assigned. Duties may include providing both on-site and telephone support for the resolution of operating systems and applications, as required.
  • Prepare reports summarizing departmental technical activities.
  • Incumbent may be required to respond to inquiries from staff outside of normal business hours to support campus operations.

Scripting and Programming:

Customize and upgrade operating and related systems to meet ongoing user needs. Examples of typical work activities include:

  • Plan and implement modifications and upgrades to system configuration to improve utilization based on analysis of application and production requirements
  • Develop scripts and programs using Perl, Shell, and other programming languages to automate central and critical campus services, storage administration, and user management tasks.
  • Document operations procedures installation methodologies, and modifications
  • Maintain campus Identity Management framework and related scripts. Implement new features and functions at management's request.

Performance and Security Monitoring:

Evaluate the level of systems operation and recommend measures to improve overall performance and security. Examples of typical work activities include:

  • Conduct analytical studies of system processing time and resource capacity, measuring system performance against predetermined or standard benchmarks (e.g., operating time, error rates, and types)
  • Determine system compatibility and performance and impact of integration with new systems or upgrades
  • Provide security analysis for enterprise-level server systems
  • Develop and carry out appropriate periodic maintenance procedures, diagnose and correct errors, maintain appropriate records, and produce and carry out specified change control processes.
  • Monitor security bulletins for software in use in the server environment
  • Assess the criticality of security patches and make recommendations to management as to the potential impact of the related vulnerability.
  • Develop server hardening standards based on CIS templates.

Architecture and Design Review:

Provide an architecture and design review of new and existing products and projects as requested by management. Examples of typical work include:

  • Assess the system’s ability to integrate into existing infrastructure
  • Evaluate the security of the system
  • Determine the ongoing supportability and viability of the system

 

QUALIFICATIONS

To enter this classification, a basic foundation of knowledge and skills in operating systems programs, maintenance, and systems administration features is a prerequisite. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor’s degree, preferably in computer science, mathematics, or a related technical field, or equivalent technical training and/or experience. Foundation knowledge and skills for the Operating Systems Analyst include a working knowledge of the assigned computer operating systems, systems analysis, and systems-level programming.

Incumbents at the expert level work almost completely independently on the most complex problems and work assignments. They possess an advanced and comprehensive knowledge of the technical specialty and a working knowledge of related specialties and are able to apply this extensive expertise as a generalist or specialist. Experts are proactive and understand problems from broad, interactive perspectives and are able to develop solutions that combine information and ideas in new, unprecedented ways. Incumbents at this level are capable of leading teams and implementation efforts for assigned projects using advanced communication and listening skills. 

  • Ability to support Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 and compatible distributions such as Rocky and Alma Linux
  • Ability to automate basic tasks in common shell scripting languages such as bash as well as more complex scripting tasks in languages such as Perl or Python.
  • Knowledge of modern operating system theory and operation, especially Linux and Windows; knowledge of modern programming languages, including Java, C, Linux-based scripting languages, SQL; knowledge of networking technologies, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing, and firewall configuration and operation
  • Ability to debug complex technical problems with modern computer operating systems, applications, and networks.
  • Ability to work in a server environment consisting of hundreds of servers, including understanding the concepts around managing that many servers, implementing and conforming to deployment standards, and troubleshooting issues that span multiple systems providing varying services.
  • Ability to implement and support Linux-based authentication and SSO platforms, including LDAP, Kerberos, RADIUS, and Shibboleth
  • Knowledge of and ability to troubleshoot SSO authentication protocols, including SAML, CAS, and OIDC.
  • Ability to manage, implement, and troubleshoot MFA services, including Duo.
  • Ability to interact with others and to communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical users.
  • Ability to manage AWS infrastructure, including Elastic Load Balancers, EC2 instances, Auto Scaling Groups, and supporting technologies.
  • Knowledge of internal operating system technology, computer operations and hardware, and network communications theory.
  • Ability to use, implement, and manage performance monitoring software and interpret results to make recommendations about system performance.
  • Ability to perform preventative and remedial maintenance to the operating system(s).
  • Ability to interface/integrate campus-defined operating system(s) with software and other systems.
  • Ability to evaluate existing and proposed systems and recommend upgrades and/or modifications.
  • Knowledge of applications programming techniques and procedures.
  • Understanding of job control and production procedures with an ability to troubleshoot and isolate production problems and application code.
  • Ability to research and survey new products and/or releases, such as productivity tools.
  • Ability to establish and document operations procedures.
  • Knowledge of network operating system and network architecture, configuration, and protocols.
  • Knowledge of client-server technologies.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Certifications in AWS
  • Certifications in Linux
  • Master’s degree in computer science
  • Experience working in an academic environment
  • Experience with the following:
    • Amazon Web Services
    • LDAP, preferably OpenLDAP
    • Security/authorization/authentication, Kerberos, use of LDAP for Unix naming services
    • Solaris/ZFS
    • Automated provisioning/management, experience working in large-scale deployments with hundreds of servers.
    • Revision control systems such as subversion, git, et al.
    • MySQL/Postgresql
    • SMTP, virus/spam scanning
    • PHP
    • Samba/Dfs/Windows file sharing

CSU Classification

The classification salary range for this position, according to the respective skill level, is a minimum of $7,371 and a maximum of $14,274 per month.
