Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Program Director for the Center for Asian Pacific Islander Student Empowerment (CAPISE), the Program Coordinator is responsible for providing support with the planning, coordination, implementation, and assessment of student success programs and workshops that serve students of Asian and Pacific Islander (API) descent and celebrate their heritage/culture. The Program Coordinator will work collaboratively with internal and external partners and stakeholders that will make it possible for programs and activities to be sustained.

The Program Coordinator will train, supervise, and evaluate student undergraduate and graduate student leaders in a manner that empowers them to lead their own special projects and achieve desired outcomes for the programs they support.

The Program Coordinator will support the creation of a welcoming, friendly, and affirming cultural academic space within the center that values, respects, and promotes an appreciation for the diverse API communities at SJSU.

The Program Coordinator will support the center’s communication efforts, including the development and distribution of an e-newsletter, posting to social media outlets, and updating website content. As a member of the SJSU Solidarity Network, the Program Coordinator will attend planning meetings and facilitate workshops and events.

The Program Coordinator will work jointly with the rest of the center’s professional and student staff to coordinate the daily operations of the center and will participate in outreach and yield efforts throughout the academic year.

The Program Coordinator will also assist with summer orientation efforts that may include offering presentations, workshops, and resource tabling.

The Program Coordinator will support the Program Director with the coordination and implementation of signature annual campus events, including SJSU’s Asian and Pacific Islander Graduation at the end of the academic year that celebrates the scholastic achievements of API graduates.

Lastly, the Program Coordinator is responsible for assisting the Program Director with the management of the fiscal budget. This includes keeping record of center operations expenditures and making purchases.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the development, planning, coordination, and assessment of multiple academic-affirming and culturally-sustaining student success programs, events, activities, and workshops designed to support API student transition, retention, and graduation. This includes supporting the implementation of the API Empowerment Program, a First-Year-Experience Mentorship Program for new API frosh. 
  • Assist in the development and delivery of high-impact programs in relation to API student retention and graduation.
  • Identify, build, and maintain relationships with affinity API groups, including recognized student organizations to enhance center presence in the API student community.
  • Lead the coordination of SJSU’s API Heritage Month and Annual API Graduation.
  • Responsible for maintaining records and summary reports of CAPISE programming, activities, and events to be submitted monthly.
  • Support Program Director with the recruitment, hiring, training, directing, supervision, and the evaluation of undergraduate and graduate student staff leaders.
  • Supervise, guide, and coach student staff leaders in their social, leadership, academic, and identity development; Support and advocate for students’ holistic well-being.
  • Monitor and evaluate student staff leaders’ academic progress.
  • Provide support, advocacy, intervention, and referrals to students in need of retention services and resources. This includes connecting students to crisis and basic needs support services.
  • Handle a variety of complex and sensitive student issues in relation to faculty, staff, and family member dynamics.
  • Coordinates day-to-day operations of the Center for Asian Pacific Islander Student Empowerment, including front-desk coverage, event calendar management and scheduling.
  • Review, manage, and facilitate inventory of the center's materials and supplies. Provide administrative support including but not limited to photocopying, scanning, printing, etc.
  • Creates and orders promotional items and marketing products for the center; Maintain inventory of items to ensure proper disbursement at key events (Admitted Spartan Day, Summer Orientation, student outreach and recruitment events, Weeks of Welcome). Maintain an archive of all events, programs, and activities (flyers, brochures, programs).

  • Thorough knowledge of and skill working with historically underserved students, specifically Asian & Pacific Islander college students.
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of asset-based frameworks used to support Asian & Pacific Islander college students.
  • Ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment.
  • Knowledge of assessment techniques and ability to develop cohesive reports.
  • Ability to use a broad range of computer skills and software.
  • Ability to take initiative, collaborate, and complete projects.
  • Ability to prepare various documents including operations manuals and procedures, program and activity schedules, and budget reports.
  • Ability to conceptualize program functions and procedures and implement those relevant to improving program efficiency.

Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
  • Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Asian American Studies, Ethnic Studies, Sociology, Psychology or related field.
  • Experience with developing and implementing retention initiatives for historically underrepresented students focused on closing equity gaps.
  • 2 years of program coordination experience in a college setting.
  • Experience working with faculty, staff, and students in higher education.
  • 2-3 years of experience working directly with Asian and/or Pacific Islander college students.
  • Experience hiring, training, and supervising college student staff.

 

Compensation

Classification: Student Services Professional III
Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,540/month
CSU Salary Range: $5,540/month - $7,893/month
