(Job #549581) Student Services Professional II/ 3082, Accessibility Advisor, Salary Range: $5,083-$7,228, Hiring Range: $5,083-$5,337. This is a full-time, benefited, exempt, 12-month, permanent position with a one-year period in Department. Position Summary:
The purpose of this position is to provide students with disabilities equal access toward academic success and to equip the campus community (professors, deans, administrators, and campus departments, housing, registrar's office, etc.) with recommendations in administering legally mandated accommodations appropriate to section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the ADAAA guidelines. The position will determine program eligibility and provide disability counseling, collaborate with campus academic advisors, advocacy and appropriate accommodations. Collaborate with faculty and present best practices for universal design in order to ensure equal access and legally mandated accommodations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Accessibility Advising (40%)
- Providing support and guidance to students with disabilities to help them achieve academic success. This includes assessing needs, developing and updating accommodation plans, and coordinating accommodations.
- Maintain records and case notes in confidential student files (25%)
- Maintaining accurate and detailed records of students served, disability documentation, and documenting the services provided. Case notes detailing all interactions including Records of Correspondence, Consultations, Information Sessions, Analysis of Documentation, Accommodation Memorandum, and Case Management.
- Collaborate with/guide faculty and staff (15%)
- Working with faculty, staff, and other campus professionals to ensure that students receive appropriate academic accommodations. This includes email correspondence, 1-on-1 meetings with faculty/staff, WrapAround meetings with student and faculty, and department/campus wide meetings. 15
- Support programming outside of accommodation (15%)
- Facilitating disability related workshops and/or trainings for departments, classrooms, or campus wide events.
- Other duties as assigned (5%)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Associated with this Position Include:
Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural, multisexed and multi aged value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned. Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas.
As related to the major responsibilities for this position:
- Ability to interpret and understand medical and psychological information; and determine appropriate services and reasonable accommodations based on provided documentation.
- Ability to recognize the need for and formulate and implement policies and procedures dealing with issues of disability and the needs of veterans and their dependents on a university campus.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and articulate appropriate resolutions to situations and knowledge of emerging issues and trends.
- Knowledge of federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and policies applicable to college students with disabilities.
- Extensive knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act; and knowledge of ADA guidelines for physical accessibility and parallel state laws and codes.
- Ability to interpret university policies, federal and state laws relating to disabilities in higher education.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups, across units, and ability to manage change.
- Ability to strategically plan, develop and evaluate campus-wide programs serving students.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to communicate in a positive and effective manner.
- Awareness and knowledge of assistive computing technology.
- Knowledge of appropriate accommodations for completing degree requirements, accessibility to the classrooms and meeting places, and providing course materials in alternative formats to students with disabilities.
- General advising skills.
- Must be familiar with a variety of electronic devices and software used within the office and accommodations for students – LiveScribe pens and software, Google Docs and Hangouts, Read & Write software, CCTV, Smart Markers, audio recorders, Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs), tablets, and other IOS devices.
- Commitment and sensitivity to and working in a supportive environment with students of diverse backgrounds and learning styles.
- Ability to independently manage their daily work calendar in a fast paced, high student volume environment.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Equivalent of two years professional experience within student services or related field.
- Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences or related job field. A Master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.
- Experience working with a diverse group of individuals including individuals with disabilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Two years of experience working with people with disabilities in higher education
- Master's degree preferred in one of the behavioral sciences or related job field
- Two years of Case Management experience
