Job Summary:

The New Student Orientation and Family Programs Office supports the successful transition of newly admitted students and their families to CSUSB by providing inclusive, informative orientation programs and services. The office promotes academic success, campus resource awareness, student engagement, and a sense of belonging. In addition, the office recruits and trains Student Orientation Leaders who serve as peer ambassadors and support orientation programming. Through these high-impact transitional experiences, the office helps students and families build confidence and establish a strong foundation for success at CSUSB

Under the overall leadership of the Director of New Student Orientation and Family Programs, and with day-to-day guidance and coordination provided by the Orientation Program Coordinator, Cody the Coyote Mascot Student Assistants will serve as California State University San Bernardino’s official mascot, Cody the Coyote, at university and community events. This role delivers dynamic performances, maintains the highest standards of professionalism and character integrity, and contributes to ongoing mascot program initiatives to strengthen campus pride and community connections. As a member of the Cody Team, the individual may serve in multiple roles—performing as Cody, assisting as a handler, or supporting as a photographer—to uphold the quality and professionalism of the mascot program.

Responsibilities:

Under the overall leadership of the Director of New Student Orientation and Family Programs, and with day-to-day guidance and coordination provided by the Orientation Program Coordinator, duties include but not limited to:
- Perform as Cody the Coyote and/or serve as an active member of the Cody Team—handler, photographer, driver, etc.—at Cal
State San Bernardino and community appearances.
- Represents Cal State San Bernardino’s mission and core values in a positive and friendly manner through performances at on and off-campus events.
- Commits to the assigned schedule of Cody the Coyote appearances at on-campus and off-campus events, including university breaks, evenings, and weekends, as applicable.
- Maintain proper use and care of Cody the Coyote costume as directed, ensuring cleanliness, safety, and performance readiness.
- Interacts with diverse audiences—students, faculty, staff, parents & families, children, and community members—using only nonverbal communication and ensuring all performances are appropriate, authentic, and family-friendly
- Distributes Cal State San Bernardino promotional items designed to create good will and increase school spirit.
- Pose for photographs and participate in event activities while maintaining performance standards.
- Create engaging content for Cody the Coyote’s social media platforms, and actively participate in monthly planning meetings with the social media committee to develop strategies promoting school spirit, community engagement, and maintain Cody the Coyote’s brand.
- Participate in mascot training sessions to enhance performance skills, safety practices, teamwork, and overall program consistency.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to learn and perform assigned work; follow oral instructions; work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and other students; communicate effectively with all levels; and read and write English at a level appropriate to the position.
  • Special Qualification: Admission or registration as a CSU student.

Required Qualifications:

  • Maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. or greater per semester and cumulative.
  • Students must be enrolled in at least halftime units at CSUSB (6 units undergraduate; 3 units graduate)
  • International students must have full-time enrollment at CSUSB. (12 units undergraduate; 6 units graduate)
  • Eligible to work in the United States
  • Payroll Requirement: Social Security Card

Preferred Qualifications: 

- Maintain a 2.5 GPA or greater, per semester and cumulatively.
- Prior experience with cheer, dance, and/or mascot training.
- Must possess required skills and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodation, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
- Outgoing and creative personality with a willingness and desire to have fun.
- Ability to perform entertaining and spirited promotional activities in front of audiences.
- Ability to work scheduled event dates, including evenings, weekends, and during university breaks if necessary.
- Ability to learn and perform assigned work.
- Follow oral instructions; work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and other students; communicate effectively with all levels; and read and write English at a level appropriate to the position.
- Complete all required paperwork, background check, and employment training.

Special Conditions: 

- Must be between 5’8” – 6’2” in height and appropriate body size to wear the Cody the Coyote costume comfortably and support the weight of the costume for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift and move 50 pounds without assistance.
- Must have good posture and physical ability to perform Cody the Coyote actions (i.e., standing, running, kneeling, reaching, jumping, bending, waving hands/arms, etc.)
- Work is performed indoors and outdoors, with exposure to varying temperatures.

License / Certification: 

- Possess a valid driver’s license and complete the university defensive driving course.

Compensation and Benefits:

Student Employment Anticipated Hiring Range: $16.90 - $18.00 per hour.

The compensation offered will consider internal equity and experience among other factors.

Position Information:

Work status: Part-Time, Temporary, Seasonal

Academic year available hours: Monday through Friday (8:00 am – 5:00 pm).

Summer available hours: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm).

Conditions of Employment

Background Check
Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) may be required for student employment purposes. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check when required may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Driver’s License Check
Possession of a valid Driver's License may be required.  Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.
