Compensation and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: Equipment Technician I, Electronic - $4,090 - $4,172 per month

                                                Equipment Technician II, Electronic - $4,595 - $4,687 per month 

Full CSU Classification Salary Range: Equipment Technician I, Electronic - $4,090 - $5,959 per month

                                                      Equipment Technician II, Electronic - $4,595 - $6,694 per month

  • This is a full-time (equivalent to 40 hours per week), probationary, non-exempt position.

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, the incumbent performs skilled repair, maintenance, troubleshooting, assembly, installation, calibration, design, modification, and fabrication (ET-II only) of scientific instrumentation, equipment, and teaching aids in support of teaching and research in multiple departments within the College of Science and Mathematics.

The incumbent will develop and maintain positive and professional working relationships with faculty, staff, and students within the College of Science and Mathematics, with university safety and facilities staff, and with instrumentation vendors and suppliers outside the university. They will maintain accurate records of inventory and maintenance of equipment. They will provide feedback and recommendations on the purchase of new instrumentation and equipment.

 

Key Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of:
    • Safety practices, procedures, rules, and precautions associated with equipment and working conditions.
    • Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance, repair, and operation of electrical and scientific equipment.
    • Computers and their use in the control and operation of scientific equipment.
    • Best practices in the maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of electrical and scientific equipment.
  • Ability to:
    • Communicate clearly, accurately, and succinctly in written and oral formats.
    • Work independently, showing sound judgement in coordinating and prioritizing technical tasks.
    • Analyze equipment problems and determine what repairs are needed.
    • Maintain, troubleshoot, repair, assemble, install, and calibrate scientific equipment.
    • Design, modify, and fabricate space, electrical systems, and instruments (ET-II only).

Education and Experience

  • Journey-level or skilled experience (2 years for ET-II, 1 year for ET-I) in the maintenance, repair, and operation of scientific or electrical equipment.
    One year of the required experience may be substituted by:
    • Equivalent to two years of semi-skilled experience maintaining and repairing scientific or technical equipment. OR
    • Equivalent to two years of trade school or technical arts training with specialization in electrical or scientific equipment, completion of an apprenticeship program, or completion of a full military specialization in the required type of equipment maintenance and repair. OR
    • An associate's or bachelor's degree in a science or engineering field including hands-on experience working with instrumentation.

 

Department Summary

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers four rigorous, high quality degree programs (B.A. Chemistry, B.S. Chemistry, B.S. Biochemistry and M.S. Chemistry) that prepare students for careers in research, industry and education, as well as preparing students for admission to Ph.D., medical, pharmacy, dentistry and osteopathic medicine programs. Our programs provide opportunities to gain hands-on experience with modern instrumentation, to conduct research under the guidance of faculty mentors, to take laboratory classes in private-sector facilities, participate in the Chemistry Honors program, and contribute beyond the classroom to promote science in local schools and our community.
