The Department of Special Education at San Francisco State University seeks applicants for its part-time lecturer for our Early Childhood Special Education Program Academic Year Fall 2026 - Spring 2027.
The Department of Special Education was established in 1948 as the first such academic unit in the state of California. Through the decades, the Department provided leadership in the field with prominent faculty members in the areas of inclusive education, visual impairment, early childhood special education, autism spectrum, transition to work, orientation and mobility, and deaf education. In 1967, San Francisco State College began the Joint Doctoral Program (PhD) in Special Education with the University of California, Berkeley. The Joint PhD Program was the first such program approved in the state of California by the Joint Graduate Board. Now in its seventh decade, the Department of Special Education continues our commitment to professional preparation, research, and scholarship.
The Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) student teaching supervisor plays a pivotal role in guiding student teachers toward completing their field experiences and coursework for their Education Specialist ECSE preliminary credential (infant/toddler or preschool/transitional kindergarten/kindergarten). Serving as the primary liaison between San Francisco State University (SFSU) and cooperating school sites, the supervisor manages a "trio" relationship consisting of themselves, the student teacher, and the cooperating mentor teacher.
The core of the supervisor's responsibility lies in two areas: first, supporting the student teacher in providing feedback on their student teaching portfolio and as appropriate, the ECSE CalTPA in Literacy and Math. Second, having a minimum of six interactions and/or formal site observations throughout the semester, with each meeting or site visit lasting approximately 45 to 60 minutes. The supervisor is required to conduct a minimum of two site visits. Subject to agreement by the student and the host site, video recordings may be utilized.
Following each observation, the supervisor will deliver structured, actionable feedback within a timely fashion (e.g., five business days). This process works in tandem with concurrent seminar coursework to foster the student's reflective practice, ethical development, and successful transition into the field of special education.
