Full-time, professional-in-residence teaching and advising position in the Department of Journalism and Public Relations, College of Communication and Education, California State University, Chico. Beginning date: August 2018. California State University, Chico is seeking faculty who are competent in their field, collaborative with colleagues and staff, and committed to student success. Position is contingent on funding.

Minimum Education and Experience

Earned master’s degree in journalism or related field. Candidates near completion of master’s degree may be considered, however, the master’s degree must be complete prior to August 2018. Three years of professional journalism media experience is required. Must demonstrate potential for leading, advising and inspiring college journalism students, as well as ability to manage an organizational budget. Must possess strong interpersonal skills and exhibit passion for the First Amendment. Must also demonstrate potential for teaching in at least two of the following areas: news writing, public affairs reporting, applied media law, ethics, data journalism and multi-platform news.

Additional Requirements and Responsibilities for this position

Advising and supervision of the print and digital editions of The Orion, Chico State’s award-winning, student-run news organization. Management of editorial and business operations of The Orion as a non-profit organization. Teaching, academic advising, alumni relations and recruitment. Professional activity, which may include writing, editing, communication consulting or research is required to demonstrate professional currency, as is service to the department, university, community and profession. Teaching load is two courses per semester, advising The Orion, student advising, alumni relations and professional engagement. Teaching assignments based upon the qualifications of the individual and the needs of the department.

Recruitment Preferences

University teaching and alumni relations. Fund raising, advertising sales, marketing and/or public relations experience. Expertise in and ability to each social media and multi-platform media skills. Involvement in professional associations in journalism and/or college media advising. Commitment to continued currency in journalism. Interest in diversity recruitment and retention.

CSU, Chico offers a number of benefits to its employees (e.g., sick leave, vacation, health insurance). Eligibility for standard CSU benefits is based on an appointment of half-time or more for a period exceeding six months. Employees appointed less than half-time or less than six months are not eligible for standard CSU benefits but do receive prorated sick leave and vacation.

Eligibility for Affordable Care Act (ACA) benefits is based on an appointment of at least three-quarter time, hired to work a minimum of 130 hours per month over the course of the appointment or works an average of 130 hours or more per month during the measurement period. The ACA guidelines provide for health coverage or FlexCash only. ACA does not provide dental or vision plan coverage.
