The Department of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering and Sustainable Manufacturing (MMEM) is searching for a tenure track Assistant Professor to start August 2018. California State University, Chico is seeking faculty who are competent in their field, collaborative with colleagues and staff, and committed to student success. Candidates should have expertise in automation, robotics, sustainability, and advanced manufacturing. The position offers the opportunities and challenges of growing the Sustainable Manufacturing program and shaping its future. The successful candidate will embrace the challenge of advancing a major that prepares students for positions of responsibility in today’s modern manufacturing environment. Position is contingent on funding.

Minimum Education and Experience

The minimum education requirement for appointment to this position is a terminal degree in engineering, manufacturing, or closely related field. Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate may be considered; however, all requirements for conferral of the doctorate must be completed prior to the beginning of the academic year (August 2018). Candidates must have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, proficiency in written and oral English, and expertise in manufacturing. The successful candidate should also demonstrate a commitment to and/or experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Additional Requirements and Responsibilities for this position

This tenure-track position carries responsibilities in the areas of teaching at the undergraduate level, scholarship and professional development, and service to the department, university, and community. Candidates should strive to collaborate both within the college and with other colleges across campus. Preference is given for teaching experience and/or applied research projects with economic, environmental, or societal gains. Service includes student advising, serving on academic committees, Capstone Design Program advising, and industrial outreach activities that promote business, workforce, manufacturing policy, and economic development. Teaching assignments are based upon qualifications of the individual and the needs of the department.

Recruitment Preferences

Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in industrial or manufacturing engineering. Industrial experience is preferred, as is expertise in additive manufacturing, automation, robotics, PLC’s, next generation control and regulation systems such as EtherCAT, and/or CAD. Candidates should have practical experience or familiarity with manufacturing areas such as project management, operations, planning, quality, health and safety, ISO 9000/14000, sustainable manufacturing assessment, and design for manufacture.

CSU, Chico offers a number of benefits to its employees (e.g., sick leave, vacation, health insurance). Eligibility for standard CSU benefits is based on an appointment of half-time or more for a period exceeding six months. Employees appointed less than half-time or less than six months are not eligible for standard CSU benefits but do receive prorated sick leave and vacation.

Eligibility for Affordable Care Act (ACA) benefits is based on an appointment of at least three-quarter time, hired to work a minimum of 130 hours per month over the course of the appointment or works an average of 130 hours or more per month during the measurement period. The ACA guidelines provide for health coverage or FlexCash only. ACA does not provide dental or vision plan coverage.

About the University, Hiring Department and Community

The Department of MMEM offers three accredited B.S. degree programs: Mechanical Engineering (454 current majors), Mechatronic Engineering (222 current majors), and Sustainable Manufacturing (79 current majors). The Department also offers a minor in Manufacturing (31 current minors). It is one of seven departments in the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Construction Management (ECC).

The department prides itself in maintaining rigorous curricula, delivering programs that are practice-oriented with a strong design focus, and having accessible faculty who provide a high degree of personal attention to all students. A major strength of the department is the Capstone Design Program for mechanical and mechatronic engineering, with about thirty industry-sponsored design projects completed each year. The department has several active student chapters that include the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), American Institute of Mechatronic Engineers (AIME), Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE), Engineers for Alternative Energy (EAE), and the Materials Research Society (MRS). The College and Department typically support several major extracurricular student projects such as the ASME Human Powered Vehicle Challenge, the Baja SAE competition, the Formula SAE competition, the Manufacturing Challenge, and the Collegiate Wind Competition. Chico State has a tradition of performing well in these competitions.
