Job/Department Summary:
Under general direction, the Corporal performs a wide range of law enforcement duties to ensure the safety and security of the Chico State campus community. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: patrolling campus buildings and grounds on foot or by vehicle; maintaining public order; enforcing laws, rules, and regulations; responding to motor vehicle collisions and emergencies; apprehending and processing violators; gathering evidence; and preparing and presenting clear and comprehensive oral and written reports. Corporals may also testify in court and provide assistance to students, employees, and visitors on matters of public safety.
In this lead role, the Corporal may supervise police officers in the absence of the Sergeant. They are responsible for ensuring that all actions taken are legally and constitutionally sound. Corporals may rotate through various assignments and, when designated by the Chief of Police, may serve in specialized roles such as investigator, crime prevention officer, or community relations specialist. They may also develop and deliver training programs in accordance with department and POST standards.
The University Police Department (UPD) at Chico State is responsible for law enforcement, physical security, and emergency response on campus. The department operates 24/7, year-round, and is staffed by sworn police officers, professional civilian staff, and auxiliary personnel. UPD peace officers possess full statewide police authority, with the same powers and responsibilities as municipal or county law enforcement agencies.
As the primary responder for a wide range of campus emergencies-including medical incidents, injuries, and environmental hazards—UPD also handles crime reporting and investigations (excluding homicides and missing persons under the Kristin Smart Act). In addition to traditional policing, the department provides proactive services and programs to support campus safety and align with the university’s educational mission. These efforts are grounded in a commitment to excellence, professionalism, and community-oriented policing principles.
UPD is part of the business and finance division, which is dedicated to providing a safe, attractive and vibrant campus environment; responsive and resourceful solutions for campus departments; and timely and accurate financial reporting.
Required Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent and graduation from a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) academy.
AND
Two or more years of active law enforcement experience.
License and Certification Requirements:
Peace Officers in this classification must be or have:
• Eligible to be a peace officer in the State of California.
• Possess a valid P.O.S.T. Certificate of Eligibility or a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate in good standing.
• Valid California drivers license.
Preferences:
Preference may be given to applicants with the following as they may be considered specialized skills:
- Minimum of three years’ experience as a Police Officer
- Bachelor's Degree or higher
- POST Intermediate or Advanced Certificate
- Prior leadership or instructor experience
- Specialized training in CIT, Peer Support, Critical Incident Response, or Emergency Management
- Strong verbal and written communication skills

Work Schedule: Sun-Wed OR Wed-Sat, 6:00am-6:00pm OR 6:00pm-6:00am
CSU Classification Salary Range: $84,672 (Step 5) - $124,848 (Step 22) per year.

The person holding this position is considered a “General Mandated Reporter” under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 (revised July 21, 2017) as a condition of employment.
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Clery Act and is required to comply with the requirements of this designation.
The work schedule may include varied rotating shifts, including day and/or night shifts, weekends, holidays, and voluntary or assigned additional hours and overtime.
